unrest - perfect teeth (1993)

perfect teeth came out on 4ad and teenbeat in 1993. i think this album is way better than imperial or any other unrest records as a whole. this record makes me wish i were born ten years younger 'cause i would have loved to have this as the soundtrack to my teen years. this band was a tidal wave of fresh, experimental energy and were pretty unclassifiable despite their pop sensibilities.

from allmusic:
Unrest's final and best album is both jangling and lush, and covers many styles of pop music. "Angel, I'll Walk You Home" is filled with pristine vocal harmonies, while "Cath Carroll" is flashy, thrashy punk-pop. "Light Command" is wistful and triumphant. "Breather X.O.X.O." is majestically melancholy, and "West Coast Love Affair" is breezy and tongue-in-cheek. Unrest's experimental and pop leanings come together with terrific success on Perfect Teeth, making it a high point in the band's too-brief recording career. - heather phares.

the clean - vehicle (1990)

vehicle was released during the first clean reunion era of the early 90s. more straight-forward and coherent than earlier clean but that is totally not a bad thing here. this album is a BLAST of fun, raw energy and if you've never heard the band before this is definitely the album to start with.

david kilgour - sugar mouth

this is david kilgour of the clean's first record, released in 1994 on flying nun. recorded just shortly after the recording of the the clean resurgence album modern rock. this sound is much safer and straight-forward than the clean even in this particular era, but kilgour's hip, airy, and carefree writing style makes up for that fact. even if the reliance on guitars makes the songs a little altarna-dad-rock, the songs are still stronger than what the clean has put out in recent years.

toulouse - new points new lines

this is a music blog. i'll be posting records and videos that i think are cool. i'll start off by sharing one of my favorite albums, and one of which i stole the title for said music blog. anyway,

toulouse:

new points new lines. this record came out on grimsey records *short-lived minneapolis pop label that put out some amazing and criminally overlooked records in the mid-late 90s.* smart, sexy, post-punk with drum-machine rythms played on real drums. sort of young marble giants-y but a little louder and more playful.
